O Levante de Páscoa ocorrido na Irlanda em 1916 teve grande impacto histórico, pois se firmou como uma das principais bases para a independência do país que veio a acontecer em 1922. A literatura, que poderia ser considerada como uma das mais vibrantes formas de expressão artística da Irlanda, amplamente discutiu, representou e revisitou tal fato histórico. Dada a relevância da face literária da cultura irlandesa, era de se esperar que outros fatos históricos também se manifestassem artisticamente como foi o caso dos movimentos feministas ocorridos a partir dos anos 70 na já República da Irlanda. O presente trabalho almeja, então, propor uma análise da antologia de contos The Portable Virgin (1991) da escritora irlandesa Anne Enright atentando para a representação desses movimentos históricos em sua obra literária. Em seus contos, Enright questiona o papel da mulher da sociedade irlandesa do fim do século XX e reivindica direitos sociais e civis. Dessa forma, pretende-se mostrar que a literatura exerce papel fundamental em tal sociedade não só por representar questionamentos históricos, mas também por se apresentar como agente daquele movimento se configurando como ato político.

The Easter Rising which took place in Ireland in 1916 had a great historical impact as it was one of the main pillars for the country's independence occurred in 1922. The literature, which could be considered as one of the most vibrant forms of artistic expression in Ireland, widely discussed, represented and revisited this historical fact. Given the importance of the literary face of Irish culture, it was expected that other historical facts also were manifested artistically as in the case of the Feminist Movements that were hold from the 70s on in the Republic of Ireland. Therefore, this study aims to propose an analysis of the anthology of short stories The Portable Virgin (1991) by the contemporary Irish writer Anne Enright paying close attention to the representation of these historical movements in her literary work. In her short stories, Enright questions the role of women in Irish society of the late twentieth century and claims social and civil rights. Thus, we intend to show that literature plays an essential role in such a society not only to represent historical questions, but also to present itself as an agent of that movement shaping up as a political act.
