The main objective of this paper is to show that tense, aspect and mood morphemes – TAM morphemes – in African languages present allomorphs related to the ‘subjectivity’ (or to the “situation of utterance”). In another words, the speaker – or the “subject of the enunciation” – is the source of ‘modal’ specifications, marked on the verbal morphology in these language. In this work the focus is on tense markers in Ibibio and the importance of to look at this syntax/discourse interface in Indigenous languages.
