The Amazon rainforest today is the focus of a variety of scientific studies that seek to analyze the impact of human occupation on the forest cover. The main issues relating to this theme involve the evolution of the deforestation process and how to predict it. Therefore, the objective of this work was to simulate and validate the dynamics of deforestation in region of the Amazon. To this end, two simulation models: (1) Markov Chains, and (2) Artificial Neural Networks, were fitted with data on land use and cover extracted from LANDSAT images from the periods of 1997 and 2001. To validate the models, comparisons were made of the simulated values and the values observed in 2004. Data on land use and cover indicate that in the area of study the absolute deforestation rates declined from 4.71% to 1.43%, while the forest regeneration rates increased from 0.14% to 2.53% during this study. Markov Chain simulation showed small variations (12.5%) compared with neural network (23%) between observed and simulated data for non-forest areas. The simulation models proved to be inefficient, since the deforestation process did not occur in a stationary mode.
