Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar as estratégias de administração de memória no conto “Uma questão temporária”, parte da coletânea Intérprete de Males, escrito por Jhumpa Lahiri. O enredo narra a crise no matrimônio do casal Shoba e Shukumar, ambos pertencentes à segunda geração de imigrantes indianos nos Estados Unidos. A análise deseja discutir como os personagens administram a rede de sentido inerente a suas memórias e como esses sentidos causam um impacto sobre sua narrativa de identidade. Ao revisitar memórias pessoais e culturais, o casal empreende uma revisão de suas narrativas, reajustando os elos de coesão que as legitimam. Para isso, são utilizados os estudos de Brockmeier (2002) e Anderson (2008), a fim de discutir o processo de repressão e atualização dos sedimentos de memória e de entender a importância atribuída a estas memórias na produção de malhas de sentido.

This article aims to analyse the strategies of memory administration in the short story “A temporary matter”, part of the collection Interpreter of Maladies, written by Jhumpa Lahiri. The plot tells the story of Shoba and Shukumar’s marriage crisis, both belonging to the second generation of Indian immigrants in the USA. This analysis wishes to discuss how the characters deal with the net of meanings inherent to their memories and how these meanings cause an impact on their identity narrative. By revisiting their personal and cultural memories, the couple undertakes a revision of their narratives, readjusting the links of cohesion that legitimate them. For this purpose, Brockmeier’s (2000) and Anderson’s (2008) studies are taken into account, in order to discuss the process of repression and actualization of memory sediments and to understand the importance assigned to these memories in the production of meaningfulness.
