No Rio de Janeiro, as favelas ocupadas historicamente pelas classes pobres possuem uma intrínseca relação com a elite burguesa que vive aos pés dos morros. Modernidade, urbanização, saúde, higienismo, especulação imobiliária, abolição da escravatura e luta de classes: tudo se mistura junto aos moradores e aos casebres frágeis, e se apresenta nas ruas irregulares e íngremes. Os poderes públicos impulsionaram a ampliação das favelas ao passo em que lançavam aos altos dos morros suas leituras estereotipadas que permanecem no imaginário social até os dias de hoje. Com base nisso, este artigo objetiva apresentar uma narrativa histórica que, ancorada em produções cientificas e historiográficas, discorre a respeito dos impactos do discurso higienista na configuração urbana e social do Rio de Janeiro durante a Primeira República, evidenciando as alterações nas formas de viver e morar das classes pobres e negras da então capital federal.

In Rio de Janeiro, the favelas historically occupied by the poor classes have an intrinsic relationship with the bourgeois elite that lives at the foot of the hills. Modernity, urbanization, health, hygiene, real estate speculation, the abolition of slavery and class struggle: everything mixes together with the residents and fragile hovels, and is presented in the irregular and steep streets. The public powers promoted the expansion of the favelas while they launched their stereotyped readings to the tops of the hills, which remain in the social imagination to this day. Based on this, this article aims to present a historical narrative that, anchored in scientific and historiographical productions, discusses the impacts of the hygienist discourse on the urban and social configuration of Rio de Janeiro during the First Republic, highlighting the changes in the ways of living and living among the poor and black classes of the then federal capital.
