O artigo em questão pretende analisar a proposta para o laicato da II Conferência Geral do Conselho Episcopal Latino-americano, ocorrida em Medellín, Colômbia, em 1968, que tem por título “A Igreja na presente transformação da América Latina à luz do Concílio Vaticano II”, e que completou 50 anos em 2018. Para analisar a repercussão da abertura trazida pelo Concílio Ecumênico Vaticano II (1962-1965) na América Latina, utilizaremos textos do referido Concílio, a saber: Lumen Gentium, Gaudium et spes e Apostolicam Actuositatem, além de inúmeros textos e artigos que recordam este marco histórico na Igreja latino-americana. e que nos dão um cabedal de informações pertinentes à estrutura político-social do continente latino-americano. Neste escopo, será possível observar avanços significativos e também propostas ainda em andamento para um laicato atuante e comprometido, ao mesmo tempo que apresentaremos alguns atrasos e problemas diante do clericalismo atual. Dessa maneira, atente-se para analisar a vida e missão dos leigos hoje e sua atual conjuntura diante do cinquentenário da Conferência de Medellín.

The article intends to analyze the proposal for the laity of the II General Conference of the Latin American Episcopal Council, held in Medellín, Colombia, in 1968, entitled: “The Church in the present transformation of Latin America in the light of the Vatican Council II”, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018. In order to assess the repercussions of the opening brought about by the Second Vatican Eccumenical Council (1962-1965) in Latin America, we will resort to the texts of the Council, mainly: Lumen Gentium, Gaudium et spes and Apostolicam Actuositatem, as well as numerous other texts and articles that recall this historical milestone in the Latin American Church and that should give us a wealth of information pertinent to the political-social structure of the Latin American continent. In this scope it will be possible to observe significant advances and also proposals still in progress for an active and committed laity, whereas presenting delays and problems in the face of current clericalism. Thus, we will analyze the life and mission of the laity today and their current situation in view of the 50th anniversary of the Medellín Conference.
