A série Children of Violence, da escritora inglesa Doris Lessing, pode ser lida como um Bildungsroman. Esse é um gênero estreitamente ligado ao grupo social no qual o aprendizado do protagonista acontece, e nesse caso, Martha enfrenta uma sociedade preconceituosa, injusta e periférica, que é sacudida pelo advento da Segunda Grande Guerra. O impulso por mudanças, no entanto, é insuficiente e se dissipa, e ela acaba por migrar para a Inglaterra, presuntivamente sua pátria, um país desconhecido. É lá que seu aprendizado se completa. A série é composta por cinco romances, Martha Quest, A Proper Marriage, A Ripple from the Storm, Landlocked e The Four-Gated City.

The series Children of Violence, by Doris Lessing, can be read as a Bildungsroman. This genre is closely linked to the social milieu where the protagonist’s apprenticeship happens. Here, Martha Quest faces an unfair and prejudicial peripheral society, shaken by the Second Word War. The impulse for changes, however, isn’t strong enough and becomes dissipated, and she ends up migrating to England, presumably her motherland, indeed an unknown country. It is there that Martha’s apprenticeship completes itself. The series is composed by five novels, Martha Quest, A Proper Marriage, A Ripple from the Storm, Landlocked and The Four-Gated City.
