Junto a Manuel de Araújo Porto-alegre, começamos a pensar a literatura como
sendo lugar privilegiado à catarse. A literatura, em especial aquela produzida no interior da
Revista Niterói, possuÃra também uma função medicamentosa, cumpria a função de animar e de
anestesiar os indivÃduos para o enfrentamento de uma vida irregular e imprevisÃvel, no fundo
terrÃvel e dolorosa. A literatura, em especial a música e a poesia, animaria os homens e as
mulheres da boa sociedade, permitindo a eles a alegria necessária para insistir em suas
existências e auxiliava, a um só tempo, na própria superação do modo de ser egoÃsta, e isto
porque os homens apáticos e desesperados em relação à sua existência tenderiam a dedicar-se
exclusivamente à realização de suas paixões, de suas inclinações, ao passo que aqueles tocados
pela música e pela poesia passariam, subitamente, a amar o todo, ou seja, a natureza, seus
irmãos, pais e amigos, enfim, a pátria. Para tanto, analisaremos o texto de Araújo Porto-alegre
escrito para o primeiro número da Revista Niterói, intitulado – Idéias Sobre a Música.

Along with Manuel de Araújo Porto-alegre, we began to think of literature as a
privileged place to catharsis. The literature, especially that produced within the magazine
Niterói, has also a function of drug, had the duty to enliven and anesthetizing individuals to face
a life irregular and unpredictable, deep and terrible pain. The literature, especially poetry and
music, animate men and women of good society, allowing them the joy necessary to insist on
their stocks and assisted, at the same time, in overcoming their own way of being selfish, and
this because men desperate and apathetic about their existence would tend to devote himself
exclusively to carry out their passions, their inclinations, while those touched by music and
poetry would suddenly love the whole, the nature, their siblings, parents and friends, finally, the
homeland. We will analyze the text of Araújo Porto-alegre writing to the first edition of Revista
Niterói, titled – Idéias sobre a música.
