Este artigo tem como objetivo realizar um breve percurso pelas pesquisas sobre esporte
realizadas no âmbito acadêmico de Letras, especialmente os estudos literários. Demonstrar-se-á que
foi justamente em Letras que, na década de 1960, realizaram-se estudos pioneiros sobre o esporte,
temática que seria posteriormente abordada em outras áreas, sobretudo, História e Antropologia.
Contemporaneamente Letras tem voltado a ser espaço de produção de conhecimento acerca dos
esporte, destacando-se nesse sentido um dos mais importantes teóricos da literatura Hans Ulrich
Gumbrecht. Além desse breve percurso, o artigo busca lançar possíveis contribuições futuras do
campo de Letras para as pesquisas em torno do tema esporte.

This article has as objective to provide a brief history of the research on sports
carried through in the academic scope of Letters, especially the literary studies. It will be
demonstrated that it was exactly in Letters that, in the decade of 1960, fulfilled pioneering studies
on sports were accomplished; thematic that would be later boarded in other areas, above all, in
History and Anthropology. Contemporarily, Letters have come back to be space of production of
knowledge concerning the sport, being distinguished in this aspect one of the most important
theoreticians of literature Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. Beyond this brief trajectory, the article tries to
launch possible future contributions of the field of Letters for the research on sports.
