This article sees tourism from a new viewpoint, the one based on Niklas Luhmann’s
theory of society as a system, which characterizes tourism as an element that
appears in the process of evolution of society and has its function in it. With this
purpose a historical review is made on its appearance, and the possibilities to allow
its expansion are analyzed. Finally, the paper identifies the relationship of tourism
with free time and leisure, and offers an explanation about its social function.
En el presente artÃculo se parte de una nueva concepción del turismo desde la
perspectiva de la teorÃa del sistema de la sociedad, de Luhmann, que permite
caracterizarlo como un elemento que aparece en el proceso de evolución de la
sociedad y que cumple una función en ella. Con este propósito, se hace una
revisión histórica sobre su aparición y se analizan las condiciones de posibilidad
que permiten su expansión. Se completa la exposición al identificar su vinculación
con el tiempo libre y el ocio y ofrecer una explicación sobre su función social.
