Este artigo tem como objetivo principal analisar a peça do escritor irlandês George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), Saint Joan – A chronicle play in six scenes and an epilogue (publicada no Brasil como Santa Joana). Para tanto, foram estudadas algumas biografias de Shaw, bem como crÃticas literárias sobre seus trabalhos e obras a respeito do perÃodo histórico em si: o final do século XIX e as primeiras décadas do século XX. Com isso, procurei perceber quais influências da sociedade em que vivia estão presentes nessa peça - sejam essas influências de cunho cultural ou polÃtico - e como elas afetaram a forma como Shaw representou Joana d‟Arc em Santa Joana.

The main purpose of this article is to analyze the play Saint Joan – A chronicle play in six scenes and an epilogue (published in Brazil as Santa Joana), by Irish born playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950). To accomplish this I studied a few of Shaw‟s biographies, as well as literary criticism on his works and books on the historical period itself: the last years of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twelfth century. Thus, I sought to observe which influences of the society he lived in can be seen in this play - either cultural or political - and how they affected the way Shaw represented Joan of Arc in Santa Joana.
