Este artigo visa compreender como se deu o processo de formação do Instituto Normal Superior como instituição educacional do amazonas entre os anos de 1890 a 1893, assim como, busca compreender a extinção do Lyceu Provincial do Amazonas, ao apresentar sua função e finalidade para a educação em Manaus no final do século XIX. Verificando a influência por parte da República que começa a se estabelecer como discurso político vigente, onde a educação era vista como o principal vetor dos discursos de progresso por parte dos dirigentes. Para subsidiar os objetivos deste artigo recorremos aos Relatórios de Presidente de Província, Relatório da Instrução Pública, Mensagens, Decretos, e principalmente os documentos do CEDOC-CADPII (Centro de Documentação do Colégio Amazonense D. Pedro II), pois conseguimos mapear boa parte dos ofícios destinados ao Instituto Normal Superior, para assim poder traçar as principais movimentações internas deste estabelecimento.

This article aims to understand how the formation process of the Instituto Normal Superior took place as an educational institution of the Amazon between the years 1890 to 1893, as well as, it seeks to understand the extinction of the Lyceu Provincial of Amazonas, by presenting its function and purpose for education in Manaus at the end of the 19th century. Verifying the influence of the Republic that began to establish itself as a political discourse in force, where education was understood as the main vector of progress discourses by the leaders. To assist in the objectives of this article, we have used the Reports of the President of the Province, the Report of Public Instruction, Messages, Decrees, and especially the documents of CEDOC-CADPII (Documentation Center of the Amazonian School D. Pedro II), since we were able to map out a good part of the offices destined for the Normal Higher Institute, so as to be able to trace the main internal movements of this establishment.
