HOMMES DE LETTRES NA “CORTE DO SERTÃO”: JOÃO GUMES E A ESCRITA SOCIAL

Este artigo analisa a trajetória intelectual de João Gumes (1858-1930), editor do primeiro jornal dos sertões da Bahia, A Penna (1897-1930), considerando o “lugar social” (Certeau, 1982) de sua produção. Para tanto, observam-se filiações intelectuais e políticas do autor. Nas matérias daquele jornal, Gumes posicionava-se ante a política regional e estadual, assim como sobre eventos cotidianos, possibilitando-nos entrever uma sociedade recém-saída da escravidão e diante de desafios da emergente República. Da sua “Typographia”, o jornal circulava para várias partes do Brasil. Publicava periodicamente, também ali, trechos das suas comédias-drama A Abolição, A Sorte Grande, Intriga Doméstica, além de romances, a exemplo de O Sampauleiro. Ao lado da ativa vida intelectual, exerceu em Caetité, de onde era natural, a função de escrivão da Coletoria Geral, Tesoureiro e Secretário da Intendência. O seu jornal circulava em período de fortes disputas políticas na Bahia, quando se opunham Góes Calmon e J. J. Seabra.

This article examines the intellectual career of João Gumes (1858-1930), the
editor of the first newspaper of Bahia's backlands - A Penna (1897-1930), considering the
"social place" (Certeau, 1982) of his production. For this purpose, the article observes the
intellectual and political affiliations of the author. That newspaper's articles were
positioned to examine the affairs of state and regional politics as well as the mundane
events of everyday life, which allowed a glimpse of the regional society right after
slavery and the challenges of the emerging Republic. From his "Typographia", the
newspaper circulated to various parts of Brazil. Also, it published regular excerpts of his
drama-comedy “A Abolição”, “A sorte grande”, “Intriga Doméstica”, in addition to
novels, like “O Sampauleiro”. Beside his active intellectual life exercised in Caetité city,
where he was born, he exercised the functions of Treasurer and Secretary of the town hall
and Scrivener of the General Tax Collector. His newspaper circulated in times of strong
political turmoil in Bahia, when Goes Calmon and J. J. Seabra were opponents.
