As ocorrências

With the crisis of its hegemonic position in the twentieth century, the man went
through an intense process of disputes that resulted in behavioral and aesthetic changes in the
ideal of western masculinity. To prove those changes, was used the Theory of Appraisal of
Martin & White (2005). According to the studies of the Appraisal System, the speakers / writers
use semantic-discursive resources to express emotions, judgments and evaluations in three areas
of interaction: attitude, engagement and graduation. Based on the field of the attitude, this study
aims to identify, through language, evaluative indices of the contemporary male beauty
standard, verify the semantic preponderant area in those evaluations occurrences and recognize
the emergence of a new masculinity. In this research, of a deductive / qualitative character, were
selected four reportages published between 2009 and 2010 in the Brazilian magazines IstoÉ and
Época. The appraisal occurrences were classified according to the attitude subsystem. As
results, were detached the occurrences of judgment and evaluation. In addition, was discovered
that certain linguistic choices, especially those relating to behavioral assessments, collaborate
for the emergence of a new man.
