Historicamente a tipografia tem função de tornar visÃvel a escrita verbal. No entanto, as fontes não apresentam apenas essa função, elas também possuem a capacidade de representar qualidades visuais. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar o funcionamento sÃgnico de fontes tipográficas digitais para mostrar como algumas fontes digitais enfatizam a lógica gráfico-visual da tipografia, deixando em segundo plano sua relação verbal. Utilizando o método de análise semiótica de Charles S. Peirce, examinamos como as linguagens verbais e visuais são utilizadas em diferentes graus nas fontes digitais e propomos uma classificação dessas fontes digitais baseada no potencial significativo delas.
Digital typographic fonts: between verbal and graphic-visual logics. Historically, typography has been having the function of making visible verbal language. However, fonts have another functions besides this one - they can also represent visual qualities. The aim of this article is to analyze the sign functioning of digital typographic fonts to show how some of them emphasize the typography’s visual/graphic logic, placing their verbal relations on second plan. Using Charles S. Peirce semiotic method of analysis, we examine how verbal and visual languages are used in different levels on digital fonts and we propose a classification of digital fonts based on their significant potential.
