As universidades devem obedecer ao princípio de indissociabilidade entre ensino, pesquisa e extensão. O investimento na extensão é decisivo para que se afirme o compromisso social da universidade com a construção de uma sociedade socialmente justa, que respeite a diversidade, livre de todas as formas de opressão ou discriminação. Porém, pode-se observar que as universidades não se encontram nessa definição na prática. Por isso, o presente trabalho buscou registrar e relatar as diversas mudanças observadas nos números de projetos da Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, e em especial, dos departamentos de engenharia e arquitetura. Essa pesquisa ocorreu com o levantamento de dados dos projetos, no período de 1993 a 2013. Os resultados, mediante uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa, mostraram que os projetos de extensão atuais (2013) tiveram um aumento de 113,85% comparados ao ano de 1993. Houve mudanças no sistema de extensão, como a extinção de prestação de serviços e convênios em 2006. No Brasil, a criação do Congresso Brasileiro de Extensão Universitária levou a normatização da extensão. Através do Congresso, pôde-se observar também a de alguns programas, como o ProExt cultura e depois o ProExt MEC, fontes significativas de recursos para o fomento da extensão.

The universities should obey to the principle of inseparability between education, research and extension. The investment in the extension is decisive to affirm the social commitment of the university to build a fair society that respect diversity and is free from all forms of oppression or discrimination. However, it can be observed that universities does not have this definition in practice. Therefore, the present study sought to register and report the observed changes in numbers of projects at University of Ouro Preto especially in the Departments of Engineering and Architecture. This research occurred with the data collection of the projects, during the period of 1993 to 2013. The results, by a quantitative and qualitative analysis showed that the current extension projects (2013) had an increase of 113.85 % compared to year 1993. There were changes in the system of extension, as the extinction of provision of services and partnerships in 2006. In Brazil, the first Brazilian Congress of university extension promoted the standardization of the extension. Through Congress, could be noted also the creation of some programs as Proext culture and after the Proext MEC, which are significant resources for promotion the extension.
