O presente artigo objetiva analisar a importância estratégica do continente Antártico à Nova Zelândia e as medidas adotadas pelo país na área de Ciência e Tecnologia para garantir maior conhecimento e jurisdição sobre a Antártica. No momento no qual o planeta passa por diversas mudanças climáticas e crises ambientais, torna-se cada vez mais importante os estudos a respeito dos impactos do aquecimento global e o papel da Antártica na estabilização do clima; tais estudos são ainda mais relevantes às nações da Oceania que, com o aumento do nível do mar, correm risco de desaparecer. Utilizando metodologia qualitativa baseada em revisão bibliográfica, este trabalho analisa os dados disponibilizados principalmente pelo Governo da Nova Zelândia. Apresenta brevemente o histórico das atividades humanas na Antártica, a presença neozelandesa, e a evolução dos estudos e investimentos em Ciência e Tecnologia deste país para melhor conhecimento do sexto continente, questão que também afeta seus assuntos de Defesa. Ao final, conclui-se que, em caso de possíveis conflitos envolvendo esta região, aqueles que detiverem recursos e maior conhecimento sobre a região possuirão vantagens estratégicas.

This paper aims to analyze the strategic importance of the Antarctic continent to New Zealand and the measures adopted by the country in the area of Science and Technology to ensure greater knowledge and jurisdiction over Antarctica. At a time when the planet undergoes various climate changes and environmental crises, studies on the impacts of global warming and the role of Antarctica in climate stabilization become increasingly important; such studies are even more relevant to the nations of Oceania which, with rising sea levels, are in danger of disappearing. Based on the qualitative methodology used in the literature review, this work analyzes the data made available mainly by the New Zealand government. This paper briefly presents the history of human activities in Antarctica, the New Zealand presence and the evolution of studies and investments in Science and Technology of this country to better understand the sixth continent, a subject which also affects its Defense concerns. At the end, it is concluded that in case of possible conflicts involving this region, those who have resources and greater knowledge will have strategic advantages.
