The hegemony of the United States of America was questioned and challenged in the end of the 1950's. The Cuban Revolution, Salvador Allende's rise to power, the defeat during the Vietnam War, and the triumph of the "sandin isles" determined the decline in US foreign policy in the whole region. From the 1980's on the United States started to regain part of their power.
