Neste texto abordo os cuidados teóricos e metodológicos que o historiador deve ter ao utilizar cartas pessoais como documentos históricos, ao mesmo tempo em que ressalto a importância de fontes como essa para a escrita da história, notadamente, quando se trata de temas e personagens comumente negligenciados ou silenciados pelos documentos e arquivos públicos e oficiais, como é o caso dos amores e amizades homoeróticos e de personagens homossexuais. Chamo atenção ainda para os limites e os cuidados éticos que o uso desse tipo de fonte requer da parte do historiador. Abordo, ainda, como o gênero epistolar permite tratar de temas como a escrita de si e a identidade de gênero.

In this text, I approach the theoretic and methodological cares that the historian must have while using personal letters as historical documents. At the same time, I emphasize the importance of fonts, as this one, for the composition of the history, especially when we deal with themes and characters, which are commonly neglected or silenced by the documents and public/official files, as in cases of loves and homoerotic friendships, as well as homosexual characters. I also call the attention to the limits and the ethical cares that the use of this type of font require from the historian. I also broach how the epistolary gender permits to deal with themes as the self-writings and the gender identity.
