The gene Pi-ar confers resistance to rice blast in a somaclone derived from immature
panicles of the upland rice cultivar “Araguaia†and the RAPD OPK17680 marker has
been shown to be linked to this gene. The objective of the present investigation was
to determine the efficiency of the marker OPK17 for the selection of the gene Pi-ar in
a back cross population. The backcross population F1BC3 was obtained from a cross
between a susceptible upland rice cultivar “IAC 201†and the resistant somaclone
SC09. The plant population was initially screened for blast resistance against the race
IB-9 of Pyricularia grisea in the greenhouse and later the DNA of these plants was
amplified with the marker OPK17. The efficiency of marker assisted selection in resistant
and susceptible plants with marker OPK17 was 62.3%.
