O artigo aborda as mudanças da Educação Popular no que se refere à sua contribuição para a formação da cidadania, com atenção especial aos meios de comunicação digital. A base conceitual é fornecida pelas reflexões sobre Educação Popular e sobre as novas tecnologias no campo da educação. Argumenta-se que cabe à Educação Popular o papel de vigilância crítica no uso das novas tecnologias que, sob o manto da neutralidade, se colocam como promotoras das novas utopias sociais. São identificados algumas tendências e desafios em relação à interação da Educação Popular com as tecnologias digitais e os impactos destas últimas na educação em geral.

The article analyzes the changes in popular education in terms of its contribution for citizen education, with special emphasis on the digital means of communication. The conceptual framework is taken from the reflections on popular education and on the new technologies in the field of education. It is argued that popular education has the role of critical vigilance in the use of new technologies which, in the name of neutrality, present themselves as new social utopias. There are identified some tendencies and challenges regarding the interaction between popular education and the digital technologies, and their impact on education in general.
