Este artigo focaliza o papel da Educação Ambiental com o processo de desenvolvimento e manutenção da Agricultura Sustentável. O estudo faz uma revisão das conseqüências ambientais da agricultura moderna e o conceito entre Agricultura Sustentável, focando na importante conexão entre Educação Ambiental Emancipatória e nas mudanças apoiadas junto à Agricultura Sustentável. A educação rural no Brasil, ainda hoje, reproduz duas situações indesejáveis: o desligamento da realidade rural, onde o conceito do ambiente rural é transferido para o urbano, e a opção pelo modelo aristocrático de desenvolvimento, que exclui a agricultura familiar e ainda continua comprometido com os princípios da Revolução Verde, que, nas últimas décadas, priorizou a introdução de sementes, agrotóxicos e máquinas na agricultura. A Agricultura Sustentável, juntamente com a Educação Ambiental, vem compreender um instrumento de exercício da cidadania em um contexto de construção de uma nova racionalidade ambiental, tendo como base a participação dos agricultores e agricultoras, a eqüidade, o direito à pluralidade e autodeterminação das comunidades locais, compreendendo a biodiversidade como patrimônio coletivo e instrumento de inclusão social.

This article aims to analyze the role of Environmental Education within the process of Sustainable Agriculture development and maintenance. The study makes a review of the environmental consequences of modern agriculture and the concepts behind Sustainable Agriculture, focusing on the important connections between Emancipating Environmental Education and the changes supported by the Sustainable Agriculture. Rural education in Brazil, still today, reproduces two undesirable situations: the disconnection from the rural reality, where there is a transfer from the urban concepts to the rural environment, and the choice for an upper class development model, that excludes familiar agriculture and is still attached to the Green Revolution principles, which, in the last decades, enhanced seed introduction, use of agrotoxics and mechanization. Sustainable Agriculture together with Environmental Education come to comprehend a citizenship exercise instrument at a context construction of a new environmental racionality, based on the participation of male and agriculturists, fairness, plurality right and autodetermination of local communities, comprehending biodiversity as a collective patrimony and social inclusion instrument.
