O referente trabalho surge de uma pesquisa de mestrado na qual se objetivou avaliar os resultados do projeto de políticas públicas “Educação Ambiental e gerenciamento integrado dos resíduos sólidos em Presidente Prudente-SP: desenvolvimento de metodologias para coleta seletiva, beneficiamento do lixo e organização do trabalho”, que teve início em 2001 e término em 2005, realizado em parceria pela FCT/Unesp, Prefeitura Municipal de Presidente Prudente, Companhia Prudentina de Desenvolvimento e outras instituições públicas e privadas, com apoio da FAPESP. Constatou-se que a prática em Educação Ambiental em projetos de coleta seletiva que contou com o apoio de toda comunidade até a formação de uma cooperativa de ex-trabalhadores do lixão de Presidente Prudente foi essencial para todas as fases de implantação do projeto. O ato de repensar o modo de vida e a forma de consumo são indícios que trás a tona argumentos colocados em discussão a partir de necessidades decorrentes do mau uso dos recursos naturais. Conclui-se que, a educação aliada a práticas que mobilizem a população tornam trabalhos como os de coleta seletiva que conta com o trabalho de ex-catadores de lixão é de grande importância. A Educação Ambiental se faz presente em todas as fases, ou seja, conscientização, organização e mobilização para que toda a comunidade envolvida participe de forma ativa e dinâmica.

This paper resultus from a Master Degree research in which we aimed to evaluate the results of the project of public policies "Environmental Education and integrated management of solid residues in Presidente Prudente-SP: development of methodologies for selective waste collection, processing of the garbage and labor organization", which began in 2001 and ended in 2005, realized in partnership by FCT/Unesp, City Hall of Presidente Prudente, Companhia Prudentina de Desenvolvimento (Development Company of Presidente Prudente) and other public and private institutions, with support from FAPESP. It was concluded that the practice in Environmental Education in selective collection projects that had the support of the entire community until the creation of a cooperative with former workers of the landfill of Presidente Prudente was essential to all the phases of implantation of the project. The act of rethinking the way of life and the consume are signs that bring to light reasoning put in discussion from the needs arisen from the bad use of natural resources. It is concluded that, education combined with practice that mobilize the population make jobs shch as the selective colletcion which is done with the labor of former workers that gathered waste in the landfill if of major importance. Environmental Education is present in all phases, that is, conscientization, organization and mobilization so that the entire involved community takes part, active and dinamically.
