O presente artigo busca elucidar a constituição “épica” de uma das figuras mais
emblemáticas e paradoxais da história colonial mineira, o mestre de campo Inácio Correia
Pamplona. A construção alegórica do personagem foi edificada pelos homens que integravam a
entrada de 1769, rumo à conquista do sertão mineiro, a partir de poemas que foram compostos
durante a expedição. Os poemas exaltam a imagem de Pamplona como um “herói” para o sertão,
figura extraordinária por seus feitos guerreiros, seu valor e sua magnanimidade. No entanto, em
contrapartida, o que se pretende é colocar a figura mítica no seu devido lugar: o sertão oeste das
Minas Gerais na segunda metade do setecentos, demonstrando que esta visão romantizada foi
fruto de motivações políticas específicas que acabaram por tornar o sertanista uma figura
transcendental aos olhos de seus homens.

This article aims to elucidate the "epic" constitution of the most emblematic and
paradoxical figures of mining colonial history, the field master Inacio Correia Pamplona. The
allegorical character of the building was built by men who were part of the entry 1769, toward
the conquest of the mining backlands, from poems which were composed during the expedition.
The poems exalt the image of Pamplona as a "hero" for the backlands, by extraordinary figure
made its warriors, its value and magnanimity. However, on the other hand, the aim is to put the
mythical figure in its place: west backlands of Minas Gerais in the second half of the seven,
demonstrating that this romanticized vision was the result of specific political motivations that
eventually make one sertanista transcendental figure in the eyes of his men.
