Disputas sobre a origem e o significado dos cometas: o que revelam do Iluminismo português?

Resumo Português:
a interpretação dos cometas como si-nais de adivinhação sofreu um declínio significativo durante o século XVII. No século posterior, e especialmente nos denominados centros europeus do conhecimento, esse tipo de interpreta-ção foi banida da literatura científica e raramente aparecia em panfletos destinados a uma audiência de cariz popular. Em oposição, a literatura sobre cometas que recorria a uma origem sobrenatural e interpretação divina era ainda relevante em Portugal no século XVIII. Durante esse período, foram publicadas obras a favor dessa interpretação e outras com o propósito de as refutar. as disputas atingiram o auge em meados do século XViii. Este artigo procura analisar os auto-res e argumentos envolvidos nessas controvérsias, levando em conta o contexto religioso, intelectual e social de Portugal à época. Tem como prin-cipal objectivo analisar o contributo dos debates sobre a origem de cometas para o entendimento da especificidade do iluminismo português.

The interpretation of comets as divinatory signs declinedsharply in the 17thcentury. In the 18th century, this kind of interpretation was removed from scientific literature and seldom appeared in pamphlets for popu-lar audiencesin the so-called European centers of knowledge. In Portugal, on the other hand, literature on comets that still explored supernatural origin and divine interpretation was still relevant in the 18thcentury, when texts were published in favor of this interpretation as well as other that intended to refute it. Disputes reached a height by mid 18thcentury. This paper intends to analyze authors and arguments in these controversies taking into account the Portuguese religious, intellectual and social context of Portugal of this time. Itsmain objective is to understand the significance of debates on the origin of comets for understanding the specificity of Portuguese Enlightenment
