A DIFUSÃO DO LIVRO E DA LEITURA NO ESTADO DO ESPÍRITO SANTO, NA PASSAGEM DO IMPÉRIO PARA A REPÚBLICA

Com base em diversificadas fontes documentais, o artigo aborda questões relacionadas à circulação e apropriação do livro e demais impressos – jornais, revistas, etc. –, bem como às condições de produção e circulação dos mesmos identificando, também, as políticas públicas voltadas para a difusão da leitura em interface com as mudanças da estrutura educacional e de bibliotecas públicas, no Espírito Santo, entre o final do século XIX e o limiar do século XX. Com relação à produção escrita, focalizamos o envolvimento dos professores e dos alunos das duas principais instituições de ensino secundário da cidade de Vitória na vida literária e jornalística da capital. Procuramos desenvolver essa análise a partir do entrecruzamento das informações relativas aos aspectos políticos, econômicos e socioculturais que marcavam a sociedade capixaba a partir das últimas três décadas do século XIX até o final da denominada Primeira República (1889-1930).

Based on diverse documentary sources, the article addresses issues related to circulation and appropriation of the book and other printed matter – newspapers, magazines, etc. – as well as the conditions of production and circulation of the same, identifying also the public policies aimed at the diffusion of the reading in interface with the changes of the educational structure and of public libraries, in Espírito Santo, between the end of 19th and the threshold of the 20th century. About the written production, we focused on the involvement of teachers and students from the two main secondary education institutions in the city of Vitória, in the literary and journalistic life of the capital. We sought to develop this analysis from the intersection of information on the political, economic and socio-cultural aspects that marked the society of the state from the last three decades of the nineteenth century until the end of the so-called First Republic (1889-1930).
