Este artigo apresenta uma interpretação de algumas representações de São Miguel Arcanjo e sua devoção, sobretudo sua importância para os cristãos-católicos enquanto protetor na vida e na morte, especialmente na sua função de intermediário para o socorro das almas do Purgatório, no período da História Moderna ocidental. Para tal, vale-se da análise de fontes escritas publicadas em Portugal, principalmente livros religiosos de devoção. O recorte temporal privilegia o século XVIII, mas também considera outros períodos por tratar-se de concepções religiosas que ultrapassam marcos temporais rígidos.

This article presents an interpretation of some representations of St. Michael the Archangel and his devotion, especially its importance for Christians-catholics as protector in life and death, especially in its function of intermediary for the salvation of the souls in Purgatory, in the period of modern Western history. To this end, it is the analysis of written sources published in Portugal, mainly in religious books of devotion. The major analysis favors the sources published in the eighteenth century, but also considers other periods because it is religious conceptions that go beyond strict timeframes.
