Este estudo tem como propósito discutir sobre alguns desafios enfrentados no ensino da língua inglesa na contemporaneidade. Para tanto, buscou-se refletir a expansão do inglês desde os seus primórdios até os dias de hoje. Em seguida, foram analisadas, de forma breve, as implicações dessa língua global. Desse modo, pode-se perceber que, no atual contexto de globalização, a língua inglesa é a mais falada do planeta e, por conta disso, ela se desterritorializa e passa ser a língua de todos, assumindo um papel sem precedentes na história. O referencial teórico incluiu autores como Pennycook (2007), Moita Lopes (1996, 2008), Jenkins (2006), Graddol (2006), Crystal (2003, 2005), Schütz (2013), Blommaert (2010), Ostler (2010), entre outros.
This study aims to discuss some challenges faced by the English language teaching in contemporary times. For this purpose, we reflected the spread of English since its beginnings to the present day. Then, we briefly analyzed the implications of this global language. In this way, it can be noticed that, in the current context of globalization, English is the most spoken language on the planet and because of that, it becomes deterritorialized and turn out to be the language of everybody, playing an unprecedented role in history. The theoretical framework included authors such as Pennycook (2007), Moita Lopes (1996, 2008), Jenkins (2006), Graddol (2006), Crystal (2003, 2005), Schütz (2013), Blommaert (2010), Ostler (2010), among others.
