Palliative care in Oncology adopts a humanistic and integrated approach to the treatment of patients, with no possibility of cure, reducing symptoms and increasing quality of life. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of providing palliative care in promoting the biopsychosocial well-being of patients with advanced malignancies. This is a cross-sectional study of 34 patients treated by the home care service of the Palliative Care Unit of the Mossoroense League for Cancer Studies and Fight, from January 2008 to December 2010. Participants had malignant neoplasia without curative possibility and were undergoing home palliative treatment. Data were collected through pre-coded form. The medical records identified sociodemographic data and the types of palliative care provided. The patients were divided into two groups: one whose clinical symptoms were controlled and the other in which they were not controlled to verify if the care employed was promoting symptomatological control. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test using SPSS 15.0 software, with a significance level of p <0.05. Of the patients, 73% had their symptoms controlled. The most used care were the use of analgesics, venous hydration, wound care, invasive procedures, antidepressants, antiemetics, physical therapy and laxatives. Among them, they showed a significant relationship with antidepressant symptom control (p 0.01177). In this study, therefore, palliative care offered relief from the main symptoms found, improving the terminal phase quality of life of the patients studied.
