Esta pesquisa teve como objetivos caracterizar as puérperas de uma unidade de referência e investigar o conhecimento delas acerca do aleitamento materno. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa exploratória e descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, realizada no Instituto Cândida Vargas, com 10 puérperas acima de 18 anos nos meses de agosto e setembro de 2009, obedecendo às normas da Resolução 196/96 do Conselho Nacional de Saúde (CNS) e da Resolução 311/2007 do Conselho Federal de Enfermagem (COFEN). Os dados foram analisados segundo a Técnica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC). Observou-se que o conhecimento das puérperas com relação ao aleitamento materno era restrito a importância para o bebê, evidenciando falha na comunicação entre elas e os profissionais de saúde no repasse das informações durante o pré-natal e o puerpério. Conclui-se que o incentivo ao aleitamento materno deve ser um compromisso de todas as equipes que prestam assistência ao binômio mãe-filho, como forma de minimizar os problemas que surgem durante a amamentação, garantindo assim o sucesso desta prática.
This research aimed to characterize the mothers of a reference unit and investigate their knowledge about breastfeeding. This was an exploratory and descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, conducted at Instituto Cândida Vargas, with 10 postpartum women over 18 years old in August and September 2009, following the rules of Resolution 196/96 of the National Health Council ( CNS) and Resolution 311/2007 of the Federal Nursing Council (COFEN). Data were analyzed according to the Collective Subject Discourse Technique (CSD). It was observed that the knowledge of the mothers regarding breastfeeding was restricted to the importance for the baby, showing failure in communication between them and health professionals in the transfer of information during prenatal and postpartum. It is concluded that the encouragement of breastfeeding should be a commitment of all teams that provide assistance to the mother-child binomial, as a way to minimize the problems that arise during breastfeeding, thus ensuring the success of this practice.
