Pope Francis, on the occasion of the proclamation of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, in the bull Misericordiae vultus, declares that “mercy has a value that goes beyond the borders of the Church” (23). These words motivated the preparation of this article, which aims to reflect on the understanding and practice of mercy in different religions, through a review of the literature and the speech of speakers at an interreligious event in 2016. For this, it is divided in two parts: the first, contemplates the monotheistic perspective of Jews, Christians and Islamists; the second, exposes the point of view of Buddhism. It is observed that the analyzed religions have great points of convergence in the interpretation of the concept of mercy and its practice, even though in some details they present singularities. It is also clear that religions interested in discussing related topics tend to exercise mercy in respect, esteem and collaboration with followers of other religions. Finally, it appears that it is necessary to grow a mercy culture, as pope Francis invites (20).
