A propósito de uma mudança na história do romance francês, escreveu Albert Thibaudet: “Tudo se passa como se nesses anos cinqüenta, decisivos para a história do romance, se desenvolvesse de Balzac a Flaubert uma lógica interior ao romance”. Mas o que vem a ser essa lógica interior nos próprios romances de Balzac a Flaubert? O que vem a ser essa mudança no estatuto do romance? Eis aí a proposta deste artigo: examinar essa transformação por meio de um breve comentário dos romances de Balzac e Flaubert. Para tornar mais clara a exposição, vamos nos centrar no estudo de uma personagem importante aos dois romancistas: a do estudante romântico, disposto a conquistar a sociedade, seja por seu mérito, seja por suas ambições: Eugène de Rastignac e Frédéric Moreau.

Regarding to a change in french novel´s history, Albert Thibaudet wrote: “Everything goes as if in the fifties, which play a decisive role in novel´s history, we have a development of an internal logic from Balzac to Flaubert´s novel”. But what is this internal logic in Balzac and Flaubert´s novel? What is a change in novel´s status? That is the aim of this article: to show this change through a commentary of Balzac and Flaubert´s novel. To simplify we´re going to study here a character that is important to the authors: the romantic student who wants to conquer the society by his merits or by his ambitions: Eugène de Rastignac and Frédéric Moreau.
