No século XVII a Inglaterra esteve imersa no caos político que foram as Guerras Civis (1640-1660), viraram a sociedade inglesa “de ponta-cabeça”. Entretanto, esse período vivenciou também a disseminação do medo de bruxas, com diversos episódios de caça voraz às bruxas na Inglaterra e na sua vizinha, a Escócia. O panfleto “Wonderfull News from the North”, de autoria de Mary Moore, que escreve para denunciar casos de possessão de seus filhos por uma suposta bruxa, Dorothy Swinow, é escrito e veiculado nesse contexto. Através da análise desse panfleto, busca-se demonstrar como o fenômeno da caça às bruxas esteve intimamente relacionado aos acontecimentos das Guerras Civis, responsáveis por influenciarem as emoções, medos e anseios dos sujeitos que as vivenciaram, ao passo em que a instabilidade política criou um cenário que permitiu às mulheres adentrarem o mundo do escrito.

In the XVII century England was plunged in the political chaos of the Civil Wars (1640-1660), which turned the English society “upside down”. However, this period was also experiencing the dissemination of the fear of witches, with divers witch-hunts taking place in England and in it’s neighbor, Scotland. The pamphlet “Wonderfull News from the North”, written by Mary Moore, who writes in order to denounce the bewitchment of her children by the supposed witch Dorothy Swinow, is published in said context. Through the analysis of this pamphlet, we aim at demonstrating how the witch-hunt phenomena was intimately related to the events of the Civil Wars, which were responsible for influencing the emotions, fears and anxieties of the individuals who experienced it, whereas the political instability created a scenario that allowed women to enter the written world.
