The Brazilian artist Flávio de Carvalho on the travel book The world bones (1936), as well as in his series of theoretical-fictional texts “The cats from Rome / Notes for the reconstruction of a lost world” (Diário de S. Paulo, 1957-1958) dialogues with various disciplines (aesthetics, psychoanalysis, anthropology, literature). Therefore his reflection occupies a hybrid space built by affinities and mechanisms and not by the limits of a genre. Carvalho had a close relation to the British social anthropology, besides the work of Jacob Burckhardt; thus his texts might also relate to the method of Aby Warburg, the German art historian, of organizing his library and to the texts by Edgar Wind on The Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes (1937; 1938-1939). All those intellectuals appealed to the partnership between anthropology and aesthetics in order to formulate a gesture notion of image and of time as survival
