In this study, we present a semidiplomatic edition of a ban that Antônio José Vitoriano Borges da Fonseca, captain major of Ceará, launched on September 28 1767, through which he announced that the hamlet of Jucá, where the Jucá Indians were gathered in 1727, would henceforth be known as village of Arneiroz, now a municipality. The author states that the change occurred because of a policy in which the new towns and villages should not have “pagan names”, that is, of indigenous origins, but rather the names of towns and villages of the “kingdom”, that is, of Portugal. Based on references to the historical context within the text, we conduct the research to answer, or at least discuss, two questions: what is the origin of this policy and how was it executed, especially in the captaincy of Ceará? We exposed our findings in three sections, besides the initial thoughts and the edited version of the document: codicological considerations, diplomatic considerations, textual considerations and historical considerations. The first three are not only relevant for informing the current state and location of the document, but also because the textual genre in question, the ban, is obsolete. In the historical considerations, we detail the references to the historical context within the text to answer the guiding questions. In the final considerations, we state that we share the understanding that naming a place does not concern just the physical space, but is also a political act, full of power and culture, crossed by ideologies, which, in the case of this study, lead to the completion of the indigenous world spoliation started by religion.
