The present article discussed the evidences that led the understanding of the practical activities carried out on the contents of cytology as a promoter of significant learning, as well as, pointed out possible limitations in the use of this modality of teaching. The research was carried out with a group of the 1st year of High School of a school located in the municipality of Moju, in the state of Pará. The methodology was developed through explanatory analysis of the practical activities developed, such practices were subsidized by David's Theory of Meaningful Learning Ausubel. The Mental maps were used as an evaluative exercise in classrooms previously presented. It can be concluded in this investigation that the practical activities facilitated the assimilation of the contents worked, since there was aggregation of new knowledge in the presented mental maps, sharpened the curiosity and interest of the students, collaborating effectively for the significant learning of the contents of cytology.
