ARISTOTE ET LA RHÉTORIQUE DES ÉMOTIONS: THÉORIE ET MODE D'EMPLOI

In relation to the Aristotelian division of knowledge in theoretical sciences, practical arts, productive arts and methods or instruments (organa), rhetoric is a difficult discipline to fit. Similarly, the book entitled Rhetoric was considered sometimes as a practical manual to train speakers, other times as a theoretical work on persuasion. However, Aristotelian rhetoric has a 'mixed' nature and its own methodological rules. After briefly sketching out the purpose, structure and content of this work, we are going to take into consideration the most astonishing part of Aristotelian systematization in Rhetoric, namely the theory of emotions, which allows, in our view, to illuminate the status of rhetoric as well as the public to which Rhetoric was addressed in the intentions of Aristotle.

Par rapport à la division aristotélicienne des savoirs en sciences théorétiques, arts pratiques, arts productifs et méthodes ou instruments (organa), la rhétorique est une discipline difficile à caser. De même, l'ouvrage intitulé Rhétorique a été considéré tantôt comme un manuel pratique pour former les orateurs tantôt comme un ouvrage théorique sur la persuasion. Or, la rhétorique
aristotélicienne possède une nature 'mixte' et des règles méthodologiques propres. Après avoir esquissé rapidement le but, la structure et les contenu de cet ouvrage, nous allons ici prendre en considération la partie la plus étonnante de la systématisation aristotélicienne dans la Rhétorique, à savoir la théorie des émotions, qui permet, à notre avis, d'éclairer le statut de la rhétorique ainsi que le public auquel était adressée la Rhétorique dans les intentions d'Aristote.
