O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar a representação da figura feminina no conto “Capítulo dos chapéus”, de Machado de Assis, relacionando-a ao contexto cultural da época, caracterizado pelo expressivo afrancesamento arquitetônico e literário do Rio de Janeiro às vésperas da Abolição da escravatura e Proclamação da República, tendo em vista o ano de publicação do conto no periódico A Estação. O veículo de publicação da narrativa será também considerado nesta análise, no sentido de evidenciar o entrelaçamento entre a representação da figura feminina e as demandas colocadas pelo público leitor do periódico, no qual Machado de Assis colaborava de maneira assídua.

This article aims to analyze the representation of the female figure in the short-story “A Chapter of Hats”, by Machado de Assis, establishing a relationship between the narrative and the cultural context of Machado’s time, characterized by the expressive French architectonical and literary component of Rio de Janeiro on the eve of slavery Abolition and Proclamation of the Republic, considering they ear of the publication of the narrative in the periodical A Estação. The narrative’s vehicle of publication will be also considered in this analysis, in order to show the relationships between the representation of the female figure and the demands put by the readers of the periodical in which Machado de Assis collaborated in a regular way.
