The purpose of the study was to develop a multicriteria decision model to rank rural properties covered by RIO VIVO Initiative in the Rio Doce Hydrographic Basin. It was developed a model consisting of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) tools – used to determine the weights of the criteria; and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) – used to rank rural properties. The model was applied to hierarchize 52 rural properties in a watershed in Mariana. Twelve criteria were selected for ranking, which included programs for protection of springs (P52) and expansion of rural sanitation (P42). The panel to determine the weights of criteria was carried out together with technicians involved in developing RIO VIVO Initiative. The consistency rate of the judgment matrix was 4.0% and the degree of consensus of the group was 80.9 %. Quantity of river springs and location in the microbasin were criteria that weighted the most. The rural properties located in high and middle thirds were ranked in the first positions, being priority in the implementation of interventions. The model developed promotes an adequate implementation of resources coming from water use charge, helping decision-makers once it prioritizes rural properties, optimizes logistics and reduces costs of implementing hydroenvironmental interventions, in accordance with characteristics of the sites where implementation shall take place.
