UM ILUSTRE VIAJANTE PORTUGUÊS NO SÉCULO XV: PERSPECTIVAS INICIAIS ACERCA DAS VIAGENS DO INFANTE D. PEDRO

Resumo Português:

O presente artigo consiste em analisar as viagens do Infante D. Pedro de Portugal (1425-1428),
relacionando-as com o contexto político-social do reino. Fez-se a escolha pela estruturação da análise em
dois tópicos: o primeiro relacionado com a narrativa imaginária das viagens do Infante; e o segundo
tratando da relação das viagens de D. Pedro com o reino português em inícios da Dinastia de Avis.
Tomou-se como base o Libro del Infante Don Pedro de Portugal de Gómez de Santistéban, no qual o
Infante D. Pedro é apresentado como viajante privilegiado por ter alcançado o reino de Preste João e o
Paraíso Terrestre. Conclui-se que as viagens de D. Pedro foram essenciais para o desenvolvimento das
relações diplomáticas da nova dinastia e para sua formação enquanto Infante e futuro regente do reino.

This article intends to analyze the travels of the Infante D. Pedro of Portugal (1425-1428),
relating them to the kingdom’s political and the social context. The analysis is based in two main points:
the first is related to the imaginary narrative of the Infante’s travels; the second relates D. Pedro’s travels
to the Portuguese kingdom during the first years of Avis Dynasty. The source chosen was the Libro del
Infante Don Pedro de Portugal, by Goméz de Satistebán, in which Infante D. Pedro is presented as a
privileged voyager since he reaches Preste João’s kingdom and the Terrestrial Paradise. The conclusion of
the main article is that his travels were essential for the new dynasty diplomatic connections’s progress,
and for his formation as Infante and kingdom’s future regent.
