Objective to evaluate the knowledge of nursing professionals based on in situ simulation on the recognition of sepsis. Descriptive, quantitative study, carried out in a hospital in the interior of the state of São Paulo with professionals from the nursing team of the Intensive Care Unit. Participants were submitted to a pre-test to assess knowledge, followed by an expository class and subsequent clinical simulation. After 30 days, the post-test was applied. Simulation contributed to the acquisition and retention of knowledge by nursing professionals. The mean of correct answers in the pre-test was higher in the nurse category (63.89%). In both categories, they obtained higher success rates after 30 days of the teaching strategy. However, the nursing technician category showed significant gain in the post-test (p * <0.01). It is concluded that the use of simulation in situ provided knowledge gain to nursing professionals, contributing to early recognition and minimizing mortality.
