Este artigo tem como finalidade mostrar a importância da simplificação da linguagem na Defensoria Pública da União. A DPU é uma instituição da esfera federal que presta assistência jurídica, integral e gratuita ao cidadão que não possui recursos para contratar um advogado. Nestes termos, a Defensoria é um órgão público que atua no sistema jurídico, áreas tradicionalmente vistas como detentoras de linguagens específicas e rebuscadas. Porém, todo cidadão tem o direito de compreender as informações repassadas pelas instituições públicas. O objetivo é que as informações prestadas pela DPU cheguem de forma clara e eficiente ao seu público-alvo. Este artigo é uma revisão bibliográfica e documental, ancorada nas referências à simplificação da linguagem encontradas nos documentos oficiais da Defensoria Pública da União, com referencial teórico sobre Linguagem Burocrática baseado na autora Neide Mendonça (1987) e sobre Linguagem Simples na autora Heloísa Fischer (2020). A pesquisa documental permitiu concluir que o movimento de Linguagem Simples dentro do órgão está em desenvolvimento e ainda não foram delimitadas diretrizes internas de uso. O caminho é longo para a simplificação da linguagem administrativa, burocrática e jurídica repassada ao cidadão, mas é uma das saídas para ampliar o acesso à Justiça e reforçar a cidadania.
This article aims to show the importance of simplifying the language in the Federal Public Defender’s Office. The DPU is a federal institution that provides comprehensive and free legal assistance to citizens who do not have the resources to hire a lawyer. In these terms, the Public Defender’s Office is a public body that operates in the legal system, areas traditionally seen as having specific and elaborate language. However, every citizen has the right to understand the information provided by public institutions. The objective is for the information provided by the DPU to reach its target audience clearly and efficiently. This article is a bibliographical and documentary review, anchored in references to language simplification found in the official documents of the Federal Public Defender’s Office, with a theoretical framework on Bureaucratic Language based on the author Neide Mendonça (1987) and on Plain Language based on the author Heloísa Fischer (2020). The documentary research allowed the conclusion that the Plain Language movement within the institution is under development and internal guidelines for use have not yet been defined. There is a long way to go to simplify the administrative, bureaucratic, and legal language passed on to citizens, but it is one of the ways to expand access to justice and strengthen citizenship.
