A ilustração científica pode ser definida como uma representação realista de um objeto que o ilustrador ou o cientista observa, apontando características que eles querem mostrar.
Ao longo dos anos, a ilustração tem cumprido diferentes objetivos, tornando-se uma ferramenta indispensável no serviço científico, sendo extremamente importante para a compreensão do mundo natural e reconhecida como um fator significativo no surgimento da ciência moderna (MOSER, 2014). A ilustração científica ajuda a definir o objeto de uma maneira simples, sendo imediatamente "legível" ou fácil de interpretar, mesmo para um não-erudito e é uma forma de comunicação científica visual (ALCARAZ; CORREIA; CERVIÑO, 2015; MOSER, 2014). Por estas razões, o desenho é uma ferramenta apreciada pelos cientistas.
O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar as diferentes áreas de aplicação da ilustração científica e também o surgimento da ilustração digital, particularmente a ilustração 3D.

Scientific illustration can be defined as a realistic representation of an object that the illustrator or the scientist observes, pointing out features that they want to show.
Over the years, illustration has fulfilled different objectives, becoming an indispensable tool in the science service, being extremely important to understanding the natural world and recognized as a significant factor in the emergence of modern science (MOSER, 2014). The scientific illustration helps to define the object in a simple way, being instantly “readable” or easy to interpret, even for a non-erudite and is a form of visual scientific communication (ALCARAZ; CORREIA; CERVIÑO, 2015; MOSER, 2014). For these reasons, drawing is a tool appreciated by scientists.
The aim of this article is to show the different areas of application of scientific illustration and also the emergence of the digital illustration, particularly the 3D illustration.
