O presente artigo apresenta uma sÃntese da pesquisa que tem como objetivo explicar o novo posicionamento estratégico dos CEFETs, no perÃodo 1997-2002, na perspectiva da competitividade e da gestão estratégica, considerando as peculiaridades da gestão estratégica no setor público. Durante a pesquisa foi ressaltada a nova filosofia educacional encabeçada pela Reforma da Educação Profissional, implementada nas Instituições Federais de Educação Tecnológica sob a influência do Programa de Expansão da Educação Profissional - PROEP.

The present article presents a synthesis of the research that has as objective explains the new strategic positioning of CEFETs, in the period 1997-2002, in the perspective of the competitiveness and of the strategic administration, considering the peculiarities of the strategic administration in the public section. During the research the new education philosophy was stood out headed by the Reform of the Professional Education, implemented in the Federal Institutions of Technological Education under the influence of the Program of Expansion of the Professional Education - PROEP.
