Este artigo tem por objetivo contribuir para a compreensão do modo como o problema da loucura foi concebido na historiografia do século XX. Também problematiza a forma como os insanos e a loucura foi retratada nos jornais publicados pela Igreja Católica na cidade de Cuiabá, na época da Primeira República. Para atingir tais objetivos, são discutidas algumas das representações e práticas sociais – formuladas pelas autoridades polÃtico-administrativas, policiais e médicas da capital do estado de Mato Grosso, no perÃodo em questão – concernentes aos indivÃduos considerados loucos e à necessidade de segregá-los.

This article aims to contribute to the understanding of the manner
through which the issue of madness was conceived in the historiography of the 20th
century. It also approaches the way through which the insane and the madness were
portrayed in the newspapers published by the Catholic Church in the city of Cuiabá, by
the time of the First Republic. In order to achieve such objectives, some of the
representations and social practices are discussed – formulated by the politicaladministrative,
police and medical authorities the state capital of Mato Grosso, in the
referred period – regarding the individuals considered insane and the necessity of
segregating them.
