O projeto de extensão “Promoção e incentivo ao aleitamento materno” do Departamento de Enfermagem, do Centro de Educação Superior do Oeste, da Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina visou trabalhar com os acadêmicos, profissionais de enfermagem e comunidade em geral a questão do aleitamento materno na educação em saúde, considerando que a amamentação é a prática alimentar mais adequada para a criança até 6 meses de idade, o que contribui para o desenvolvimento saudável da criança. Muitos estudos sugerem que a amamentação confere vantagens intelectuais, de crescimento e desenvolvimento, imunológicas e psicológicas às crianças. Sabe-se que apesar das recomendações sobre o aleitamento materno exclusivo, esta prática não é frequente, conforme mostram as pesquisas realizadas em diversas regiões do país. O intuito deste projeto foi acompanhar a Semana Mundial de Aleitamento Materno que acontece anualmente na primeira semana do mês de agosto, conforme preconiza a OMS (1948), capacitando assim alunos e profissionais de Enfermagem para que os mesmos possam atuar junto a comunidade no incentivo, promoção e manejo ao aleitamento materno, minimizando os elevados índices de desmame precoce, bem como as consequências pela falta da amamentação. Para propagação do conhecimento foram desenvolvidas ações incluindo campanhas na mídia, treinamento de profissionais de saúde, além de aconselhamento individualizado em amamentação. Foram observados os aspectos éticos, legais e culturais da população na realização das orientações sobre manejo do aleitamento materno.

The extension project “Promotion and incentive to the maternal breastfeeding” of the Department of Nursing, of the Center of Superior Education of the West, of the University of the State of Santa Catarina aimed at to work with the academics, professionals of nursing and community in general the question of the maternal breastfeeding in the education in health, considering that breast-feeding is practical the alimentary one more adjusted for the child up to 6 months of age, what contributes for the healthful development of the child. Many studies suggest that breast-feeding confers intellectual advantages, of growth and development, psychological imunologics and to the children. One knows that although the recommendations on the exclusive maternal breastfeeding, this practical is not frequent, in agreement shows the research carried through in diverse regions of the country. The intention of this project was to follow the World-wide Week of Maternal Breastfeeding that happens annually in the first week of the August month, as praises the WHO (1948), thus enabling pupils and professionals of Nursing so that the same ones can act next to community in the incentive, promotion and handling to the maternal breastfeeding, minimizing the raised indices of weans precocious, as well as the consequences for the lack of breast-feeding. For propagation of the knowledge campaigns in the media had been developed action including, training of health professionals, beyond individualized counseling in breast-feeding. The ethical, legal and cultural aspects had been observed of the population in the accomplishment of the guides on handling of the maternal breastfeeding.
