O presente texto aborda o tema do futebol, no contexto da realização da Copa do Mundo, Brasil 2014, caracterizado pela festa do futebol e pelas manifestações contra os gastos na construção de estádios e de outras infraestruturas de suporte à organização do evento. Paralelamente à Copa, viveu-se, então, um período de contestação e de questionamento dos investimentos avultados na realização do evento, motivando uma discussão geral dos prós e contras do futebol e da organização do evento no Brasil. É no âmbito desta discussão que surge o presente texto. O objetivo é analisar as previsões de impacto económico da Copa e comparar com os dados e factos já conhecidos após o acontecimento, analisando as discrepâncias. A discussão é enquadrada numa breve caracterização histórica do futebol no Brasil, onde o fenómeno nunca esteve isento de polémica, face ao forte impacto social que tem na sociedade brasileira. O presente texto mostra que as previsões prometiam um cenário, mas a realidade dos impactos económicos parece estar a revelar-se outra. Relativamente aos impactos económicos indiretos, são ainda difíceis de quantificar e prolongar-seão por anos.

The present text focuses on the theme of soccer, in the context of the World Cup, Brazil 2014, characterized by the soccer party and by the manifestations against the spending on the construction of stadiums and other infrastructures of support to the organization of the event. In parallel to the World Cup, was experienced, then, a period of contestation and questioning of the great investments for the realization of the event, motivating a general discussion of the pros and cons of soccer and the organization of the event in Brazil. In the context of this discussion emerges this text. The objective is to analise the predictions of the economic impact of the World Cup and to compare the data to the facts already known following the event, analyzing the differences. The discussion is framed by a brief historical characterization of soccer in Brazil, where the phenomena was never exempt of polemic, due to the great impact it has on the Brazilian society. The present text shows that the predictions promised one scenario, but the reality of the economic impacts seems to reveal another. Relating to the indirect economic impacts, those are even harder to quantify and will be prolonged throughout the years.
