Estima-se que em 1500 havia 10 milhões de indígenas no Brasil, portanto, o País já era ocupado por eles quando os portugueses chegaram. Supõe-se que tenha havido aqui um dos maiores genocídios da história. Atualmente, essa população beira um milhão de pessoas vivendo de modo precário, ameaçada de extinção. A velada atitude brasileira de indiferença para com essas pessoas é histórica. Os indígenas conquistaram muitos direitos, contudo, há necessidade de ações que os tornem efetivos. Pretende-se neste artigo expor e introduzir discussões acerca da atual situação desses povos, bem como a relação indissociável entre eles e o meio ambiente.

It is estimated that in 1500 there were 10 million indigenous in Brazil, so the country was already occupied by them when the Portuguese arrived. It is assumed that there was here one of the greatest genocides in history. Currently this population edge a million people living precariously, threatened with extinction. The veiled Brazilian attitude of indifference to these people is historical. The Indigenous have won many rights, yet there is need for action that make them effective. This article is intended to expose and introduce discussions about the current situation of these peoples, as well as the inseparable relationship between them and the environment.
