This work was developed from the perspective of lexicography and it aimed to describe the lexicon of indigenous origin from the Bahian semiarid, thus demonstrating the importance of contributions from indigenous languages to the constitution of Brazilian Portuguese (BP). It was sought to study the Tupi language, the transformations suffered by BP, and how, despite these transformations, it is still possible to find many Tupi influences in the current vocabulary. It also addresses how a language’s lexicon carries cultural history of a particular community. The research was conducted based on interviews that make up the collection Samples of Spoken Language in the Bahian Semiarid, using volume IV, elaborated in the Jeremoabo region, which was first occupied by Tupinambás peoples from the Muongorus and Cariacás groups. With the completion of this work, it is expected to contribute to gaining better knowledge of the Bahian semiarid’s linguistic reality, as well as providing didactic proposals that consider the use of dictionaries in the classroom.
