O romance Il deserto dei Tartari (O deserto dos Tártaros), de Dino Buzzati, publicado na Itália em 1940, projetou seu autor como um dos mais importantes romancistas do século XX. Escritor de obra vária e jornalista consagrado, Buzzati passará, no entanto, à história literária principalmente como o criador de Drogo, o protagonista desse romance cuja história é marcada especialmente pelo tempo, seus desdobramentos e significados. O presente artigo busca, porém, refletir sobre outro aspecto que os autores consideram importante para a compreensão do sucesso dessa obra: o espaço. É notadamente nos seus deslocamentos no espaço que o personagem buscará o sentido de sua vida. No forte, no campo, nas montanhas ou na cidade, personagem e autor desnudam as contradições da condição humana e concluem por certo pessimismo e desencanto. Esses aspectos podem ser relacionados ao contexto histórico e social em que a Itália e a própria Europa estavam submersas na época da escritura e da publicação do romance: a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Podemos afirmar, no final da nossa análise, que uma vez mais o gênero romance refaz, com este exemplo, a ponte entre a ficção e a realidade, entre a estética e a ética.

The Dino Buzzati’s novel Il deserto dei Tartari (The desert of the Tartars), published in Italy in 1940, projected its author as one of the most important novelists of the 20th century. Though he is a writer of various works and a consecrated journalist, Buzzati will pass to the history of literature mainly as the creator of Drogo, the protagonist of this novel which the story is specially marked by the time, its implications and meanings. The present article intends, however, to reflect on another aspect that the authors consider important for the understanding of the success of this work: the setting. It is notably in his dislocations in the setting that the character will search for the meaning of his life. In the fort, in the countryside, in the mountains or in the city, character and author reveal the contradictions of the human condition and conclude for a certain pessimism and delusion. These aspects can be related to the historic and social context in which Italy and the own Europe were under at the time of writing and publishing of the novel: the Second World War. We can affirm, in the end of our analysis, that one more time the gender novel redoes, with this example, the connection between fiction and reality, esthetics and ethics. KEY WORDS: Novel.
